While working on my latest project, Crooked Coast Amber Ale, for Driftwood Brewery, the leap from the chicken scratch in my moleskin notebook to the finished product struck me as interesting. While not weird to me because It’s my chosen way to work, I want to share. I hope that by opening up my creative process I can be better understood as a designer.
At the client meeting, I take quick notes, keywords that help me later remember their goals and desired imagery. I also take note of their audience, the general look and, more importantly, the feel they are after. In this case, a summer beer that evokes the west coast.
Keep in mind, I have been working with this client for a year now. We’ve developed the entire line of beers and corporate identity structure together, I know them pretty well.. My notes are perhaps even more curt than they would be for a new client.
So, all you new clients out there, this is what you might expect my creative process to look like.

You’re sharp and your work is spot on.
