It’s not terribly often I get to just make art. I forgot how much I love it. Of course, with my design-self, I choose art shows that are pretty design-y. I’m talking about Deluge Contemporary Art’s ‘RPM, the lost art of LP covers’ Happening April 10th-25th, 2009.
So, my deep dark secret is that I don’t own any LPs. I appreciate them and all, I just don’t own any. To get over this, I went to that dusty, odd little record shop in Chinatown to do some research. I saw a lot of 70′s issues like sexuality and freedom of expression as well as some really fun typography and psychedelia. I left thinking, ‘hmmm, no client, I can do whatever I want’. A designer’s … dream? We get so removed from the process sometimes, it’s at least interesting to get involved in art for art’s sake once more.
I’ve decided on an aquatic LP cover featuring a swimming woman, some fish repeat patterns and awesome type. I’m going to mix mediums, linocut for the swimming woman, and I think I’ll use watercolour and pen for the type. Woohoo! freehand! Let’s see how I do.
Here are some photos of the linocut process.

Lookin’ pretty cool, Ms. Hanson. I quiver in anticipation of the art show.
